Dear Summerland Music Camp friends,
Camp is coming up! We are planning and talking and gathering supplies - all in happy preparation for our week together. Currently, we have 35 children registered as campers, with more expected, and we are aiming at 8 youth leaders and as many adult volunteers!
In Ukulele News:
Michelle and I have borrowed pretty much every single available ukulele from the three elementary schools in Summerland - thanks to Giant’s Head, Trout Creek and Summerland Montessori! Here is a photo of our visit to William Oikos - the luthier (guitar-maker) who lives and works just 2 doors down from Summerland United. We are getting some professional advice from Bill about stringing, tuning and repairing. The ukes are ready!
Some of you have indicated that you would like to buy a ukulele from us. They will be available at my house as of the Monday before camp: July 17. Call or email me to make a time to drop by and pick one up, if you would like to have it before camp. Thanks to Rob at Bad Robot (around the other corner) for providing these at a cost that will benefit the SMC! If you need a tuner, bag, gear, etc, go there first. They cost $45 with tax rolled in.
Grown-ups, we are offering a special service this year: Tuner Coaching. Tuning a ukulele can feel scary and dangerous to some, but it’s pretty simple. We have concluded that the job of tuning mostly belongs with the adult (at least for the new or very young musician). We want YOU to feel confident so your children can play! Michelle is going to offer Tuner Coaching in the mornings from 8:15-8:30am.
If you have your own ukulele, why not bring it out now and ensure that it has all four strings and is in good repair.
Two weeks and counting..!
